Riverview Varsity Girls Basketball Recap
Last week, Riverview’s Varsity Girls Basketball team lead by Head Coach Gerard Batista defeated Durant 55-33. Alexa Morel was one of their top players, averaging 13 points per game.
Batista said, “I like to say we have a lot of top players on our team right now. I think that’s one of the things that is working for us so well this year; we have so many people contributing and being a part of it. I believe they do look up to Alexa as a leader, but we have so many girls that can fill that role.” The team overall is 11-5 in the regular season.
Batista added, “I think our experience showed. We really did a better job at limiting our turnovers and not allowing the other team to get into a rhythm early.” The team scored 18 three-pointers of their 55 points against Durant.
The last game of the regular season is Feb.1; districts will start the following week. Batista commented, “We have a shot. I haven’t seen North Port or Lakewood Ranch at all (teams the Sharks could potentially play if they reach the regionals). They have some really good players. I think, based off the other teams we’ve played, I believe we can beat any of them on any day. We just have to come out and execute.
