Wrestlers Top Wolves

Last Monday, the Sharks wrestled Newsome in a dual match. Riverview won 52-19 with several big wins in each of the individual matches. Head wrestling coach Ryan Hall says, “It was a stressful beginning when we showed up and saw that their scale was half a pound heavier than ours.” This would’ve been stressful, because it could throw off the weight classes of wrestlers.

First and foremost, Josh Guerra had an astounding victory pinning his opponent in 11 seconds. Carmelo Edwards and Nico Hernandez also pinned their opponents. With that victory, Nico Hernandez is on pace to set the record for the most wins for a freshman in a season, and could become the first freshman in school history to win a district title.

Centrell Sommers pinned his opponent, and Donte Hernandez went 5-0. Josiah Fregoso and Oscar Hernandez took their victories against tough opponents. With this win, Oscar Hernandez, with 30 wins, leads the team. Both Nico and Oscar Hernandez are trying to join their three older brothers who previously were successful wrestlers. Tony in 2016 and Andy Hernandez in 2018, were both state qualifiers, and Herman Hernandez took third at state in 2009.

The Riverview team has six wrestlers that are currently ranked among the best in the state. In the 106=weight class Lane Keck is currently ranked sixth; in the 113-weight class Josh Guerra is currently ranked third; in the 120-weight class is Tyler Forrest ranking seventh; in the 126-class Nico Hernandez is ranked 15th; at 132 pounds Chris Felix is ranked 11th and Oscar Hernandez is ranked 15th at 152.

Our overall success percentage for varsity wrestlers is 74 percent, with 59 percent success being attributed to pins.
